New Era for Labor: Creative Defiance From the Factory to the Street

What a difference five years make! In 2008, when a few hundred union workers at the Republic Windows and Doors factory in Chicago voted to occupy their plant instead of submitting meekly to being laid off, theirs was a rare act of courage in a cold winter of crisis for organized labor. Five years on, as some of those same workers cut the ribbon on their own cooperatively-run business last week, it was yet another bold step by innovative workers in a season of daring by labor.

It’s no easy thing to sign a lease, buy equipment and open a business with a group. Starting a coop is risky, just like walking off a low wage job. Asked why he and his fellows had decided to start a co-op, veteran window maker “Ricky” Maclin told me it was because they were tired of their lives being in someone else’s hands. In the last five years, two different owners for two different sets of reasons had tried to lay them off. Now Maclin and his partners are owner/operators of a cooperative company called New Era and a similar sort of determination and defiance is being seen in city after city, from fed up workers who are taking to the streets.

Fast food workers went on strike in Milwaukee this week, the fifth city to see low wage workers walk out in one-day protests. Before Milwaukee it was New York, Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit.

There’s plenty to be fed up about. The same people slashing services are talking about an economic recovery, but if this is the economy in recovery, workers seem to have no place in it. Politicians and pundits are doing ok – in fact, for anyone with a stock portfolio, the economy’s in the pink. But that old supposed pact between Big Labor and the Democrats is clearly broken. Labor unions invested millions in helping Democrats win the last election but they’re getting nothing back – at least nothing that helps working people live and rear families and eat.

Wages remain rock bottom, millions are more or less permanently out of work and those that are working are working harder, for more bosses, in less secure workplaces, with nothing in the way of benefits.

No wonder people are embracing new tactics. And surprise surprise, those tactics work.

By occupying their plant the first time (in December 2008), the New Era workers won back pay and time for a new owner to be found. By occupying a second time (in February 2012, when those new owners threatened to liquidate), they won a chance to form a cooperative and make a bid on equipment.

Now their company’s name is seeming especially apt: New Era Windows. Are we entering a New Era for labor, in fact? The last time the labor movement embraced sit-down strikes and worker occupations it was the 1930s. For most of the last century, industrial unions viewed autonomous worker co-ops as a threat. Today the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) will be representing the New Era workers and The United Steelworkers of America is working with the Basque co-ops of Mondragon to open industrial co-ops in the US.

Likewise, until recently, trade unions refused to support ambitious strikes by low-wage workers in predominantly non union industries, especially strikes led by women, and immigrants and community organizations. The one-day stoppages around the country by retail and fast wood workers this season are targeting non union chains like McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and TJ Maxx. Community groups are leading the way (although many are funded by the SEIU). They’re demanding a meaningful raise – to $15 and hour– and the real right to organize a union without attack. So far, they’re succeeding in staging one day walk outs without dire reprisals from management. That's a jaw-dropping thing, helped by visible community and church group support. And while the one day strikes may be involving only a minority of workers so far, they are clearly building support as the wave of actions shows.

What happens next? Strikes and co-ops are two different ways to respond to the finance-driven crisis of job losses and low wages. The first aims to build power at the bargaining table, the second to compete in the market. The outcome’s unsure, but just like that first occupation at Republic, the experiments themselves have unleashed new potential.

It just goes to show what can happen when workers lead the way, and when, as Jim Hightower would say, those who say it can’t be done, get out of the way of those who are doing it.

In this video from Raise MKE and Wisconsin Jobs Now! workers describe what it's like living on a low wage and why they've had enough. Today's low wage buys only about 70% of what it bought in 1968 and the majority of jobs created in this so-called "recovery" have been low-wage jobs. What's that like to live on? As one woman puts it simply, "Living on minimum wage sucks!"

http://bit.ly/MAY15 - As the above video shows, it's not easy living on a low wage. For example, the purchasing power of minimum wage has fallen over time. In fact, the minimum wage in 1968, in today's dollars, would be far above the $7.25 workers make in Wisconsin - and not just by a small amount - it would be well over $3 more an hour. It's also worth nothing that the majority of jobs created since the Great Recession have been low-wage jobs. Gone are the days of traditional middle-class workers being able to provide for a family on one income. Now we're more and more a nation of low-wage workers who's low wages only buy about 70% of what they bought in 1968.

It's just not right. Take action: http://bit.ly/MAY15

Three died in Yemen: the Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, his 16-year-old son Abdulrahman al-Awlaki and Samir Khan. A fourth, Jude Kenan Mohammed -- whose death was not previously reported -- was killed in Pakistan. In a letter to Congress, Attorney General Eric Holder suggested that all but the attack on the elder al-Awlaki were accidental, saying the other three "were not specifically targeted." The admission came on the eve of a major address in which President Obama is expected to defend the secret targeted killing program and announce modified guidelines for carrying it out. We're joined by Jeremy Scahill, author of the new book, "Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield," and co-producer of the upcoming documentary film by the same name.

After reminiscing on the now-infamous "taco mayor", Stewart lampooned Toronto mayor Rob Ford for this crack-smoking scandal, mockingly suggesting that maybe he only did it so he could get to all the crack in the city before anyone else could.

Stewart showed off video of Ford stumbling on a football field, getting hit by a camera, and even calling Chinese people "Orientals." Stewart said, "You've got to wonder: is this dude on crack?" Well...

Stewart mockingly defended Ford, saying "Maybe he's cleaning up the city by smoking all the crack in it! you're next, prostitution rings!" He laughed at the idea that the video in question was altered, or that it's not clear, as Ford's lawyer phrased it, "what the person is actually doing or smoking." Stewart deadpanned that maybe it wasn't a crack pipe, maybe it was "Wonder Woman's famed invisible pipe of truth."

Stewart then cut to Canadian correspondents Samantha Bee and Jason Jones (the latter spending the whole segment acting high on crack), who both defended the mayor's actions as just being another delightful part of Canadian culture.

On May 10th, the Associated Press news agency received an email from the US Department of Justice saying that records of more than 20 phone lines assigned to its reporters had been secretly seized as part of an investigation into a government leak. The government claimed it was a matter of national security, while the AP called it an unprecedented intrusion into its newsgathering operations. But should the journalistic community be so surprised? With the Obama White House's track record on whistleblowers and WikiLeaks, the move to spy on AP seems consistent with an administration more committed to secrecy than ever before. Is the United States still the land of the free for journalists and their sources? In this week's News Divide we speak to Laura Malone, legal counsel for the Associated Press; Jeremy Scahill, author of Dirty Wars; The World is a Battlefield; the investigative reporter Dana Priest of the Washington Post; and Ben Wizner from the American Civil Liberties Union.

The authors estimate there have been more than 10,000 additional suicides and up to a million extra cases of depression across Europe and the United States since governments started introducing austerity programs in the aftermath of the economic crisis. For example in Greece, where spending on public health has been slashed by 40 percent, HIV rates have jumped 200 percent and the country has seen its first malaria outbreak since the 1970s. An economist and public health specialist, Stuckler is a senior research leader at Oxford University. Dr. Basu is a physician and epidemiologist who teaches at Stanford University. "Had austerity been organized like a clinical trial, it would've been discontinued given evidence of its deadly side effects," Stuckler says. "There is an alternative choice that we found in the historical data and through the present recessions: When we place people and their health at the center of economic recovery, it can help get our economy back on track faster and yield lasting dividends to our society."

The storm tore through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, leveling two elementary schools, a hospital and scores of homes destroyed. Rescue crews continue to dig through the rubble in a bid to find survivors. It was the deadliest tornado to hit the United States since 161 people were killed in Joplin, Missouri, two years ago. We're joined by two guests: Beverly Allam, an Oklahoma resident who lives a few miles from Moore and lost everything in the state's tornado in May 1999; and Jeff Masters, director of meteorology at the Weather Underground.

America's 'Mission Accomplished' Legacy to Iraq: Sectarian Violence Mounts with 95 Dead

http://www.therealnews.com/t2/component/hwdvideoshare/viewvideo/76228/best-of-the-web/americas-mission-accomplished-legacy-to-iraq-sectarian-violence-mounts-with-95-dead

The Sunni-Shiite violence is a legacy of the way George W. Bush and the Neoconservatives governed Iraq in 2003-2008. They deliberately installed the Shiites in power, in an exclusivist sort of way. Neoconservative strategist Marc Gerecht Reuel talked about the goal of putting the Shiites in power. His colleague James Woolsey, a former CIA head, upbraided me at a conference for pointing out that some Iraqi Shiite groups are closely tied to the ayatollahs in Iran. I read somewhere that the Neoconservatives were convinced that unlike the Sunni Iraqis under Saddam Hussein, who sympathized with the Palestinians, the Shiite Iraqis as a functional minority would sympathize with Israel’s Jews. The Neocons were real cut-ups, with all kinds of fancy theories unconnected to reality. The Americans played strong favorites for years. They avoided having a truth and reconciliation process. They castigated the Sunni Arabs, many of whom had had ties to the Baath Party (r. 1968-2003), as little short of Nazis, and encouraged the Shiites to fire thousands of them from government employment. At the same time the Americans closed down state factories and created massive unemployment. A ‘Debaathification Commission’ fired thousands of Sunni schoolteachers and brought in Shiite cronies instead. Whereas in South Africa the truth and reconciliation commission sought truth over punishment, in Iraq the ascendant Shiites marginalized and victimized Sunnis with ties to the old Baath (or even just ties to Sunnis who had ties to . . .) Those Sunnis who formed cells to engage in bombings and sniping to get the Americans back out, bequeathed a legacy of such cells, which remain active, now aimed at preventing the Shiite establishment that inherited Iraq from enjoying its ascendancy. In all of Iraqi history from the Sumerians until 2003 there had never been a suicide bombing in that country. The technique was adopted to fight Bush’s occupation, having been pioneered by the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. And now, having screwed up Iraq royally over years, Americans can’t be bothered to even report on events there in more than a sentence on their television news. I am sympathetic to attempts to contextualize such violence, but in fact such coordinated bombings have been a feature of Iraqi life for many years. The only remarkable thing about these bombings is that they came so closely on the heels of others– in recent years the big bombing campaigns have been divided by long periods of quiescence. It is not clear that the violence is especially connected to Syria. Similar bombings were carried out before Syria slipped into civil war. And while the Iraqi military repression of Sunni Arab protesters at Hawija about a month ago, in what some Sunnis called a massacre, has inflamed Sunni-Shiite tensions, the simple fact is that before Hawija there were coordinated bombings in several cities at once. The bombings don’t appear to have a specific political aim but rather an over-all strategic one, and to take place no matter what is happening politically. Nor is the violence of the past week (or really the last month and a half) like that during the Iraqi Civil War of 2006-2007. Then, most of those killed were victims of neighborhood faction-fighting, and most victims were shot, not killed by bombs. The neighborhood fighting declined when they were ethnically cleansed. It is not likely that that sort of civil war will start back up again now, since there has been so much movement of populations. What can be said is that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki of the Shiite Islamic Mission Party (al-Da`wa) has not exactly been very good about reaching out to Sunni Iraqis and bringing them into his State of Law Coalition. To be fair, large numbers of Sunni Arab Iraqis seem unreconciled to the rise to power of the majority Shiites, who are more or less allied with the minority Kurds. Small terrorist groups among them carry out these bombings in hopes of deterring foreign investment and of keeping the new order from congealing. They cannot really change the political situation with such bombings, but they can stop nice new buildings from being built or the kind of big increase in prosperity from being achieved that make al-Maliki truly popular. They are having some success in this strategy. When I was in Baghdad a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that there were not many new buildings or construction sites and the city seemed in some ways frozen in 1991. Although Iraq is an oil state, it hasn’t been able to kickstart Abu Dhabi style building. (A developer has started work on a nice big new mall). The bombers are, then, spoilers rather than revolutionaries, and they appear to have no coherent plan beyond disruption. It is a little surprising that they manage to keep at it despite having had no political impact at all for many years. It is also surprising that al-Maliki has not been able to mount an effective counter-terrorism policy. How hard could it be to infiltrate the cells and bust them? Of course, even better would be to so mollify the general Sunni Arab population that they become willing to turn in the people making car bombs (you can’t make car bombs on an industrial scale without the neighbors noticing). A little over ten years ago, George W. Bush gave his infamous “Mission Accomplished” speech about how permanent warfare could now be deployed in a humanitarian fashion and without substantial loss of life to build up and maintain an global American empire. Wow.

Above excerpted from article by Juan Cole, http://www.juancole.com/ Video from Associated Press, From AP A wave of attacks killed at least 86 people in Shiite and Sunni areas of Iraq on Monday, officials said, pushing the death toll over the past week to more than 230 and extending some of the worst sectarian violence the country has seen. Supporters of geoengineering endorse radical ways to manipulate the planet, including creating artificial volcanoes to pollute the atmosphere with sulfur particles. Many scientists and environmentalists have raised concerns about geoengineering technologies designed to intervene in the functioning of the Earth system as a whole. We're joined now by Clive Hamilton, professor of public ethics at Charles Sturt University in Canberra, Australia. Hamilton's new book, "Earthmasters: The Dawn of the Age of Climate Engineering," lays out the arguments for and against climate engineering, and reveals the vested interests behind it linking researchers, venture capitalists and corporations.

In January, teachers at Garfield High School began a boycott of the test, saying it was wasteful and being used unfairly to assess their performance. The boycott spread to other schools, with hundreds of teachers, students and parents participating. Last week, the school district backed down, announcing that the Measures of Academic Progress -- or MAP test -- is now optional for high schools, but those refusing the test must find another way to gauge student performance. We speak with Jesse Hagopian, a high school history teacher and union representative at Garfield High School.

The fast food giant -- which has nearly 6,600 restaurants in the U.S. and around the world, ranking second only to McDonald's -- is the latest target in the Fair Food campaign organized by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. So far McDonald's, Subway, Burger King and Taco Bell have all joined the White House-recognized Social Responsibility Program, agreeing to pay an extra penny per pound of tomatoes to raise wages and only buy from fields where workers' rights are respected. We speak with CIW farmworker and organizer, Gerardo Reyes-Chavez.

Four decades ago, the Nixon administration attempted to block The New York Times from publishing a secret history of the Vietnam War leaked to the newspaper by whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg. Two days after the Times first published excerpts of what became known as the "Pentagon Papers," the Nixon government asked for and received a Supreme Court injunction against the newspaper, arguing that publication of the documents posed a "grave and immediate danger to the security of the United States." We speak to James Goodale, the general counsel at The New York Times during the Pentagon Papers crackdown. Goodale is a leading legal expert on the First Amendment and has just published a new book, "Fighting for the Press: The Inside Story of the Pentagon Papers and Other Battles." Goodale said he wrote book in part because of the work of Julian Assange of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, and how he is likely being targeted by the U.S. government in an ongoing grand jury probe. "My book is meant to be a clarion call to the journalist community. Wake up! There's danger out there," Goodale says. "You may not like Assange . But wake up! The first amendment is really going to be damaged. If Obama goes forward and succeeds, he will have succeeded where Nixon failed."

Maher rolled his eyes and argued that "at some point, obstruction becomes... treason." Moore agreed, going so far as to say that Republicans "hate America." Maher pointed to Republicans blocking major Obama appointments, saying that now the opposition is "more about hating [Obama] than loving your country." Moore unloaded on the GOP and argued that they have seriously sinister motives for opposing everything Obama does.

"I think these conservatives and right-wingers really--for as much as they say they love this country--they hate it. They hate the government. They hate people... why is the government the big, evil bastard here?"
Maher mockingly intoned, "'Cause, Mike, it got taken over by a Kenyan socialist, that's why!"

Moore did find a grain of optimism in young people rejecting a lot of what the Republican party believes in, saying "they're not bigots and they're not haters." He called the GOP a mere "squealing dinosaur" whose time has come.

20 Things Worth Knowing About Toronto's Crack-Smoking Mayor, Rob Ford: Many Americans awoke this morning to discover that (a) the mayor of Toronto is a guy named Rob Ford, and (b) Rob Ford smokes crack. Gawker reported last night that a cell-phone video clearly showing Ford lighting up a crack pipe — which was supposedly filmed within the last six months, while he was mayor — was being shopped around for six figures. Gawker's John Cook saw the video in person with his own two eyes, as did two reporters from the Toronto Star. Ford's lawyer calls the video "false and defamatory" and asks, hilariously, “How can you indicate what the person is actually doing or smoking?”

If you didn't know anything at all about Rob Ford, the revelation that he smoked crack on video might come as an absolute shock. Marion Barry aside, this is not something that mayors do. But if you were familiar with Ford, you might not even be that surprised. For the uninitiated, here are the twenty most important things to know about Rob Ford.

This article is From NY Magazine, for link to video clips etc: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/05/rob-ford-crack-video-toronto-mayor.html

FOR INFO ON THIS VIDEO: Tasha here! Tellin' Mayor Ford to say, NO, NO, NO to changin' what ain't broke. Everyone here at Fast Ford Nation is betting large on our mayor to keep on bein' the HAWTest political party animal in the world! WOOT! You know why everyone hates Toronto? Cuz its whiney, dreadlocked, bike suckholes are pissing on everyone's fun. We don't want a casino? WTF? Lol. Anyways, I gotta go cuz I think my tattoo has a case of bad ink. The heart is like turning black n' stuff. TASHA HEARTS YOU FOREVER ROB FORD!!!!

1.

In 1999, as a 29-year-old who had yet to enter public office, Ford was charged in Florida with DUI and marijuana possession (although the marijuana charge was dropped). When the arrest came to light during Ford's run for mayor in 2010, Ford lied and claimed he had merely been charged with failing to take a breathalyzer test, not a DUI. Lying about easily disproven things would become a Ford trademark.

Rob Ford's 1999 mugshot.

2.

In 2002, Ford suggested that instead of having a "public meeting" about locating a homeless shelter in his district, "Why don't we have a public lynching?"

3.

In February of 2003, Ford went on a tirade at a city council meeting, calling a colleague a "slithering snake" who belongs in the zoo. The city council meeting quickly devolved into absolute chaos, by Canadian standards.

4.

In 2005, Ford referred to fellow city council member Gloria Lindsay Luby as "a joke," "a waste of time," and "a waste of skin."

5.

Sometime during or before 2005, while a city councilor, Ford got into a heated argument with a reporter who called him a "fat fuck." (The good stuff starts around 1:00.)

6.

In 2006, Ford, then a city councilor, was thrown out of a Maple Leafs hockey game for getting into drunken, expletive-laden arguments with fans (and also calling them "communists"). Asked about the incident by a reporter, Ford claimed he "wasn't even at the game." A few weeks later, he admitted that he was, in fact, at the game. "I had one too many beers and I sincerely apologize," he said.

7.

Later in 2006, Ford protested against spending $1.5 million to combat AIDS because, “If you are not doing needles and you are not gay, you wouldn’t get AIDS probably, that’s bottom line." When it was pointed out to him that a growing number of women were being infected with AIDS, Ford replied, "Maybe they are sleeping with bi-sexual men."

8.

Ford absolutely hates bicyclists. In 2007, he said that if a bicyclist is killed by a car, it was the bicyclist's own fault for, uh, existing?

9.

In March of 2008, he repeatedly referred to the tireless work ethic of "Orientals":

"Those Oriental people work like dogs ... they sleep beside their machines,'' he said. "The Oriental people, they're slowly taking over ... they're hard, hard workers."

10.

That same month, Ford was charged with assaulting his wife and making threats against her, but the charges were dropped because of inconsistencies in Ford's wife's account of the incident.

11.

In June of 2010, Ford was recorded on a phone call telling a constituent that he would try to score some OxyContin for him.

12.

In October of 2011, Ford was met in his driveway by a member of Canadian comedy show This Hour Has 22 Minutes who was dressed like Xena. Ford, finding this absolutely terrifying, went inside and called 911, twice. He reportedly told the dispatcher, "Don’t you fucking know? I’m Rob fucking Ford, the mayor of this city." Ford later apologized "for expressing my frustration inappropriately."

13.

On Christmas Day of 2011, Ford's mother-in-law "called police between 4 and 5 a.m. to report that the mayor had been drinking and was taking his children to Florida against the wishes of his wife, Renata." The Toronto Star reported, "According to numerous police and emergency service sources, 911 calls to the mayor’s Edenbridge Dr. home are a reality for the South Etobicoke division. Exactly how many calls have been made is unknown."

14.

Last August, someone posted a photo to Twitter of Ford reading while driving his car on the highway. Not sitting in traffic on the highway, mind you, but "moving at about 70 km." Asked whether the allegation was true, Ford replied, "Probably. I'm busy." As mayor, Ford has refused his right to chauffeur.

Last November, Ford attempted to throw a football. Instead, he fell down. Here is a GIF of this moment.

16.

In February of this year, Ford was asked to leave a gala for members of the military after he was witnessed "speaking in a rambling, incoherent manner that alarmed some of the guests." The Toronto Star reported that it's "an open secret at city hall that the mayor has battled alcohol abuse."

17.

This March, Ford was accused by political rival Sarah Thomson of grabbing her ass during a photo and telling her she "should have been in Florida with him last week because his wife wasn’t there."

On St. Patrick's Day, Ford was escorted out of the bar Bier Markt after "storming the dance floor" and exhibiting generally drunken and "incoherrent" behavior.

19.

In April, Ford let off a loud f-bomb after walking face-first into a television camera:

20.

Oh, and in 2012, a judge actually booted Ford from office for violating conflict-of-interest laws. But Ford successfully appealed the decision and was allowed to remain mayor. Which is maybe something he regrets, in hindsight.

Bill Maher New rules - Republicans Need a Doctor

Bill Maher rips into Republicans over Benghazi fever

Last night, Bill Maher delivered a hard-hitting New Rule to the Republicans for their continual hyping of the Benghazi nothing-burger.

And finally, New Rule: there are scandals, and then there are scandals. And perspective is important. Yes, to explain Benghazi, Susan Rice used talking points. But at least she didn't have to read them off her hand!

Now this week, someone was taken off a cross-country flight in handcuffs for singing "I Will Always Love You" for three straight hours. And that's still fewer times has said "Benghazi". I've seen this woman [Megyn Kelly] say Benghazi on my TV so many times, I don't know if it's a problem with the set, or I'm in an Asian horror movie, and there's a monster named Benghazi.

Congressman and friend of Real Time Darrell Issa is the Chairman of the Oversight Committee, and as most Californians know, he made his fortune in car alarms. And now, ironically, has become a loud, repetitive, but ultimately pointless device that you wish to God someone would shut off so you could get some sleep. (audience applause)

But here's the difference between Darrell Issa and a car alarm. Sometimes when a car alarm goes off, there's an actual crime. I keep looking for the crime here, I feel like Reese Witherspoon arguing with the cop. Why are you arresting me? Susan Rice said "mob" instead of "al-Qaeda"? Obama said "act of terror" instead of "terrorist act"?

Republicans are constantly coming up with these never before stated secret rules, that they only tell you about once you've broken them.

"You don't make important speeches from a teleprompter!"

    OK.

"No golfing until we have a budget!"

    All right.

"Thou shalt not criticize the President when he's on foreign soil, unless he's a Democrat, of course, then it's OK."

Congressman Peter King thundered that the President was almost four minutes into his first Benghazi statement before he mentioned an act of terror! Ah yes, the four-minute rule. Fuck, how could I forget?!

'Scuse me, Nixon ran a burglary ring out of the Oval Office. Reagan traded arms with terrorists. Bush ginned up a war where thousands died by sending Colin Powell to lie to the UN with props, remember that? He turned an American hero into General Carrot Top! But I let it go. I said this is the business we've chosen.

But please, don't tell me that freedom died because Susan Rice broke the scared bond between citizens and talk shows. In a poll this week, 4 in 10 Republicans said Benghazi is the worst scandal in American history. Second worst? Kanye West snatching the mic from Taylor Swift.

If you think Benghazi is worse than slavery, the Trail of Tears, Japanese internment, Tuskegee, purposefully injecting Guatemalan mental patients with syphilis, lying about WMDs, and the fact that banks today are still foreclosing on mortgages they don't own, then your hard-on for Obama has lasted more than four hours, and you need to call a doctor. (wild audience cheering and applause)

And while the press has been occupied with scandal, the biggest scandal, and the most important story of the century so far, happened last week. Scientists reported that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has passed the long-feared milestone of 400 parts per million. And unless you're a chimney sweep, that's bad news. Because humans have never lived through it.

You think Susan Rice gave bogus talking points about Benghazi? What about the bullshit talking points the entire Republican Party has been spewing on climate change since the 90s? (audience applause)

I wanna see the e-mails to find out who came up with the talking points that global warming is just a theory, and that it needs more study, and climate change is a hoax. The Obama administration isn't dirty, the air is.

DeChristopher was convicted of interfering with a public auction in 2008 when he disrupted the Bush administration's last-minute move to auction off oil and gas exploitation rights in Utah by posing as a bidder. He is the subject of the new documentary, "Bidder 70." "We need to be building power as a social movement. One of the weaknesses for the climate movement," DeChristopher explains is that "we still have this huge divide between the political side of the movement that focuses on Washington and the grassroots side of the movement that's been building real power."

The comment came during a Senate hearing revisiting the Authorization for Use of Military Force, or AUMF, enacted by Congress days after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. At the hearing, Pentagon officials claimed the AUMF gives the president power to wage endless war anywhere in the world, including in Syria, Yemen and the Congo. "This is the most astounding and most astoundingly disturbing hearing that I've been to since I've been here," said Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine. "You guys have essentially rewritten the Constitution here today." We play an excerpts of Thursday's Senate hearing and our recent interview with Jeremy Scahill, author of the new bestseller, "Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield."

The plant was had not been inspected since 1985, and heavily violated safety standards. Why did this happen? The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is the government agency set to ensure workplace safety, but it's been steadily hollowed out by Republicans, it's been denied funds, and its enforcement has been severely shaved down.

This problem isn't just for OSHA though-- it's all kinds of government agencies, including the IRS. Reducing IRs enforcement is extremely counterproductive to our budget, but is that what Republicans are truly looking out for?

What about taxes on corporations? Big banks? Must essential programs be hollowed out and dismantled in favor of greed?

Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains why reducing, de-funding, and disabling government agencies and programs hurts the American people in the long run (and why Republicans won't stop doing it)
